Concrete Contractor in Vancouver, WA

Shop slab and garage slab contractor working Vancouver, WA, plus driveways, patios and walkways. Free estimates. Most of the concrete work here is replacement, not new, and the reason the old slab failed is usually not the concrete. It is what was under it. That is the part worth getting right, because it is the part you cannot inspect once the pour is done.

The pre-war and mid-century neighborhoods in the old core have driveways, walks and porch slabs that were poured with very little base under them, sometimes none, straight onto native soil. Soil in this valley moves with the season. Add fifty or eighty years and the big street trees those neighborhoods are known for, and you get cracking, heaving and slabs that have lifted at a root. Pouring new concrete on top of the same unprepared ground buys a few years and then you are back where you started. Excavating to solid ground and building a compacted base is most of the work on a job like this, and it is the difference between flatwork that lasts thirty years and flatwork that lasts five.

Access changes the price and it is worth talking about before anyone gives you a number. A lot of the older lots are narrow, with detached garages set back behind the house and alleys or gates that a truck cannot get through. Sometimes the chute reaches. Sometimes it is a pump. Sometimes it is wheelbarrows and a crew. Those are three very different days of work, and a bid that has not accounted for which one your site is will not hold.

The subdivisions built east of town from the 1970s through the 1990s have a different problem. Patio slabs and front walks that have settled, usually near a downspout or at the door, leaving a lip at the threshold. Not every one of those needs a full tear-out. Sometimes a section comes out and gets replaced and the rest is sound. It is worth having somebody look before you price a whole driveway you may not need.

Garage and shop slabs are their own job and they come up often here. A slab that will hold a vehicle, a lift, or shop equipment is not the same pour as a patio even though they look identical the day they are finished. Thickness, reinforcement and what goes underneath get sized to what is actually going to sit on it and drive across it. If the space is ever going to be heated or finished inside, the vapor barrier goes in before the pour or it does not go in at all. That is a one-shot decision.

Removal is part of most of these jobs. Old concrete has to come out before new concrete goes in, and on a tight lot with a detached garage set back behind the house, getting a breaker in and the debris out is a real part of the day rather than an afterthought. That gets priced honestly up front instead of discovered once the work starts.

Concrete is unforgiving in a way carpentry is not. A deck can be adjusted after the fact. A slab is finished in a few hours and then it is finished for good, and everything that determines whether it lasts is buried under it before the truck ever shows up. That is why I am on the job. I have been doing this thirty years, I am there for the prep and I am there for the pour, and I am the one accountable to you for what is under that slab.

Concrete Work questions in Vancouver

How much does a shop slab or garage slab cost in Vancouver, WA?

Flatwork runs roughly $10 to $29 per square foot. A shop or garage slab lands above a patio because it is poured thicker with more steel, and a vapor barrier goes in if the space will ever be heated. Removal of an old slab and access for the truck are the other two things that move the number. Send me the dimensions and a photo of how a truck reaches it for a written estimate.

Do you give free concrete estimates in Vancouver?

Yes. Send photos and dimensions through the sketch form and I will come back with a layout and a number. If it needs eyes on it I will come out.

Can you replace a heaved or cracked driveway in an older Vancouver neighborhood?

Yes. The older core was poured with little or no base, and the big street trees have lifted a lot of it. The old concrete comes out, roots and soft ground get dealt with, and a compacted base goes in before the new slab. That is most of the work and it is why the new one lasts.

Do you pour patios and walkways, or only slabs?

Patios, walkways, steps, driveway extensions and RV pads too. Broom finish is standard, and exposed aggregate or stamped is available for patios and entries.

What if a concrete truck cannot reach my backyard?

Then it is a pump or a wheelbarrow crew, and the estimate says which. A lot of Vancouver lots have a detached garage behind the house with an alley or a gate a truck cannot get through. I price the access honestly up front instead of discovering it on pour day.

Do you serve Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek and Orchards?

Yes. All of Vancouver and the unincorporated Clark County neighborhoods around it, plus Battle Ground and Ridgefield. I am based in Kalama, about forty minutes north.
