Longview was laid out as a planned city and most of the housing here went up between the 1920s and the 1950s. A whole house remodel on a house that age is a different job than updating one room. The layout you want is almost never the layout the house was built for, because these homes were built as a series of closed rooms with doors, and what people want now is space that connects.
That means the first question on any real remodel is which walls are carrying load. Some of them are holding the roof and some are not, and that gets determined before demo rather than discovered during it. If a wall is bearing, a header and posts take the load and the wall still comes out. It just costs what it costs, and you should hear that number before the work starts.
The second question is what is behind the walls. Houses this age were wired for a light and a radio, and a modern kitchen alone draws more than the original service was built to carry. Supply lines are often galvanized and have closed up from the inside over decades. Drains may be cast iron. None of that is visible until the wall is open, which is why an honest bid on a house this age tells you what gets checked and what the range is if it needs replacing, instead of pretending to know in advance.
Basements and additions are the other half of the remodel work here. A basement that was never finished is usually the cheapest square footage you will ever add, because the structure and the roof already exist. What it needs is moisture handled first, then framing, electrical, and a code-compliant way out. An addition is the opposite: everything is new, including the foundation, and it has to tie into a roof and a wall that were built eighty years ago. Both are worth doing and they are priced very differently.
Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades. Tile, framing, finish carpentry and the running of the job are mine. I have been doing this thirty years, I am on the job every day, and on a remodel that matters more than on new work, because an old house will hand you something you did not plan for and somebody has to make the call standing right there.
A whole house remodel also means living in a construction zone, and how that gets sequenced is most of whether it is tolerable. Which rooms come apart first, what stays usable, and how long the kitchen is out are things worth settling before anything starts rather than finding out as you go.

Home Remodeling questions in Longview
How much does a whole house remodel cost in Longview, WA?
On a 1920s to 1950s Longview house it depends on what is behind the walls as much as what you want in front of them. Bearing walls, original wiring and galvanized plumbing each move the number. An honest bid says what gets checked and the range if it needs replacing. Send photos and dimensions and tell me what you want changed.
Are you a house renovation contractor or just kitchens and baths?
Whole house. Layout changes, taking walls out, basement finishes, additions, flooring, interior doors and trim, and the kitchens and baths that go with them. One licensed contractor running the whole job.
Can you finish my basement in Longview?
Yes. An unfinished basement is usually the cheapest square footage you will ever add. Moisture gets handled first, then framing, electrical and a code-compliant way out.
Do you build home additions in Longview?
Yes. Everything is new on an addition, including a foundation that has to tie into a house built decades ago. It is priced very differently from finishing space that already has a roof.
Are you a licensed general contractor in Longview, WA?
Yes. Washington license JAMESHC764LM, bonded and insured, thirty years in the field, owner on the job every day. Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades.
