Deck Builder in Vancouver, WA
Decking contractor, deck contractor and deck builder working Vancouver, WA. Vancouver has two completely different deck problems depending on which side of town you are on, and they do not get solved the same way. If you are in the older core, the question is what your house will actually let you attach to. If you are out east, the question is usually what to do with a deck that has quietly reached the end of its life.

Hough, Carter Park, Shumway, Arnada and the streets around them are largely 1920s through 1940s houses, and they are the reason deck work in Vancouver takes more looking than measuring. A ledger board is only as good as what it bolts to. On a house that age you are often dealing with original board sheathing, a rim joist that is undersized by anything a modern code official would sign off on, and in some cases no continuous rim at all. Nobody can tell you what is back there from the driveway. It has to be opened up.
Sometimes the answer is that the house is not the right thing to hang a deck on at all, and the deck gets its own beam and its own posts standing free of the wall. That costs a little more in footings and it is the correct call. A ledger fastened into framing that will not hold it is the single most common way a deck fails, and it does not fail slowly.
Cascade Park, Fisher's Landing and the neighborhoods built out from the 1970s through the 1990s are a different job. Those decks are pressure treated, they were built to the standard of their day, and a lot of them are now thirty to fifty years old. What usually brings the call is a soft board or a railing that moves. What we find under it is more often the fasteners and the flashing than the lumber. That is worth knowing before you price a full teardown, because sometimes the framing is sound and sometimes it is not, and you should find out which one you have before you spend anything.
You have probably already gotten a number from an installed sales program at one of the big home centers. Those are real quotes and they get real decks built. The difference is who shows up. That work goes out to a crew the store contracts with, and which crew you get depends on the week. When you hire me you get me. I have been doing this thirty years, I am on the job every day, and I am the one accountable to you when something needs a decision. Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades. The carpentry is mine.
Save yourself the wait
Nobody can bid a job that has not been drawn, and the county will not take a permit application without a drawing. Send me the dimensions and a couple of photos of the space, and I will come back with a sketch and a real read on what your deck needs. If it needs eyes on it I will come out, and I will show up already knowing what I am looking at.

Decks & Patios questions in Vancouver
How much does a deck cost in Vancouver, WA?
Size, height, decking material and railing drive it. On an older Vancouver house the ledger attachment can add cost if the rim is not something a deck can hang from. Send me the dimensions and a photo for a written number, or run the free deck estimator on this site for a range.
Do you do deck replacement and deck repair in Vancouver?
Yes. A lot of the 1970s to 1990s decks east of town are at the end of their life. Sometimes the framing is sound and it is a re-deck. Sometimes the ledger and flashing failed and it is a rebuild. I open it up and tell you which before you price a teardown.
Can you attach a deck to a 1920s or 1940s house?
Sometimes. On original board sheathing with an undersized rim, the right answer is a freestanding deck on its own beam and posts next to the house. It costs a little more in footings and it is the correct call.
Trex or cedar for a Vancouver deck?
Both work. Composite like Trex or TimberTech costs more up front and needs no staining. Cedar looks better to some people and needs maintenance. I give real numbers for both before anything is ordered.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Vancouver or Clark County?
Usually, if it is attached or more than 30 inches above grade. The City of Vancouver permits inside city limits and Clark County handles unincorporated areas like Hazel Dell and Salmon Creek. I pull it, and the drawing it needs is the one I build from.
Do you serve Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek, Camas and Washougal?
Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek, Orchards and all of Vancouver, yes, along with Battle Ground and Ridgefield. Camas and Washougal are case by case depending on the job.
