Deck Builder in Battle Ground, WA

Decking contractor working Battle Ground acreage and subdivisions. Decks, floating decks, pergolas, and deck repair. Battle Ground is really two towns for deck work. North and east of the city you are on acreage, with room to build whatever the site calls for and nobody close enough to care. Come down toward Vancouver and it turns into subdivisions, where the lot is tight and the deck has to earn every foot it takes. Those are different jobs and they do not get bid the same way.

On acreage the deck is often not attached to the house at all. It lands out in the yard by the shop or the fire pit, or it wraps around to catch the view, and once you are freestanding you are into real structure. There is no ledger doing half the work for you. The whole thing stands on its own beams and its own posts, spans get longer because there is no reason to make them short, and at a certain point the beam stops being a doubled two-by and becomes engineered lumber. That is a decision that gets made from the layout, not from a catalog.

A floating deck is often the right answer out here. It is not attached to the house at all and it does not need footings below frost line the way an attached structure does, which makes it the cheaper and faster way to get a usable surface out by the shop, around a fire pit or off a slider that sits close to grade. The trade-off is height. Once you are more than a step or two off the ground you are into guards and stairs and it stops being a floating deck, so the grade decides whether this is an option before anything else does.

Pergolas come up constantly on acreage and they are a different build than a deck with a roof on it. An open-top pergola takes wind rather than shedding it, so the posts, the beam connections and the footings get sized for uplift, not for the weight sitting on top. Over a deck, the post locations have to land on structure that was framed to carry them, which is why it is worth deciding on the pergola before the deck gets built rather than after.

Ground is the other acreage question. Level is rare out there. A site that falls two or three feet across the footprint changes the post heights, the footing depths and whether you are required to guard the whole thing. None of that is a problem, but it does have to be drawn before it can be priced, and it is the reason a phone estimate on an acreage deck is worth about what you paid for it.

Not every deck needs to come out. Deck repair is a real option when the framing under it is still sound, and on a lot of these houses it is. What usually brings the call is a soft board, a railing that has gone loose, or stairs that have started to move. Sometimes the structure below is fine and the surface and the fasteners are what failed. Sometimes the ledger or a post base has been taking water for years and the deck is closer to done than it looks. That gets determined by opening it up and looking, not from the yard, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you price a full teardown. Patio and patio cover repairs work the same way.

The subdivisions south and west toward Vancouver are the opposite problem. Those houses went up through the 1990s and 2000s with a builder-grade pressure treated deck off the slider, and that deck is now twenty to thirty years old and sitting right at rebuild age. The lot is small enough that the deck is most of the usable backyard, so where the stairs land and which way the boards run actually change how the space works. This is where a drawing pays for itself, because you can move a stair on paper for free.

The programs the big home centers run will build you the standard attached rectangle and they will build it fine. What they are not set up for is the freestanding structure out by the shop, the wrap that follows a grade, or the deck that has to work around what is already on an acre. Those jobs need somebody to look at the site and draw it. When you hire me you get me. I have been doing this thirty years, I am on the job every day, and I am the one accountable to you when something needs a decision. Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades. The carpentry is mine.

Decks & Patios questions in Battle Ground

How much does a deck cost in Battle Ground, WA?

Size, height, material and railing drive it. A freestanding deck out by a shop or fire pit costs more in structure than one hung off the house, because it carries itself. Send me the dimensions and a photo for a written number, or run the free deck estimator on this site for a range.

What is a floating deck and do I need a permit for one?

A floating deck is freestanding, low to the ground, and not attached to the house. Under 30 inches above grade and not attached, it often does not need a permit in Clark County, which is why it is the cheap and fast way to get a usable surface by a shop or off a low slider. Once it is higher than that you are into guards, stairs and a permit.

Do you build pergolas and patio covers in Battle Ground?

Yes. An open pergola takes wind rather than shedding it, so the posts and footings get sized for uplift. Over a deck, the posts have to land on framing built to carry them, so decide on the pergola before the deck is built.

Do you do deck repair in Battle Ground?

Yes. A soft board or a loose railing on a 1990s or 2000s subdivision deck is the most common call. Sometimes it is a re-deck over sound framing. Sometimes the ledger has been wet for years and it is a rebuild. I open it up and tell you which.

Can you build a deck on sloped acreage?

Yes. A site that falls two or three feet across the footprint changes post heights, footing depth and whether the whole thing needs a guard. It gets drawn before it gets priced, which is why a phone estimate on an acreage deck is not worth much.
