A house tucked into a neighborhood has neighbors and trees breaking the weather before it ever reaches the wall. Out where the valley opens toward the mountain there is nothing between your siding and the wind. Wind-driven rain gets behind material that would be fine on a sheltered lot, and it finds the same weak points every time: the bottom course, the corners, and the windows on the weather side.

That is why the layer under the siding is the part I care about here. Siding is the first line and water gets past it eventually on every wall ever built. What protects the structure is the weather barrier underneath, and on older houses in town it is often torn building felt or nothing at all.

We use WeatherSmart house wrap and install it the way the manufacturer requires, because their representative trained us on it directly. He also comes out and checks the wrap on each job before any siding goes on. Once the siding is up nobody can inspect what is behind it, so that visit is the only chance anyone gets to confirm the wall was built right. Properly installed wrap carries its own warranty separate from the siding warranty over it.

Over the wrap we install James Hardie fiber cement lap. On an exposed site it holds up to weather in a way wood stops doing after a few decades, it does not rot, and it holds paint far longer. It costs more than vinyl and it takes proper cutting and fastening, which is exactly the part you cannot see from the road on day one.

Trim is where an exposed house gets tested. Corners, window and door surrounds, and the joint at the bottom of a wall are where wind-driven water gets in, and they are the details that get rushed on a job priced to be cheap. Every opening gets flashed and trimmed properly, because that is the seam that has to hold.

Shops, outbuildings and second structures are common out here and they get the same wall assembly as the house. A building sided cheap on a windy site is a building you re-side again sooner than you planned. When you hire me you get me. Thirty years, on the job every day.

Send me photos of each elevation and a rough size on the house, and tell me how exposed the place is. I will come back with a real read on what the job takes.

Siding questions in Castle Rock

What siding holds up best on an exposed Castle Rock property?

James Hardie fiber cement lap over a properly installed weather barrier. It does not rot, holds paint far longer than wood, and handles wind-driven rain that gets behind lighter material. The trim and flashing at corners and openings are what make it hold on a windy site.

How much does siding replacement cost in Castle Rock, WA?

Wall square footage, trim and openings, exposure, and what turns up behind the old siding. Send photos of each elevation, a rough size and how exposed the house is for a written number.

Do you side shops, barns and outbuildings?

Yes, and they get the same wall assembly as the house. Doing them while the crew and staging are already on site is far cheaper than a separate job later.

Do you install house wrap under the siding?

Yes. WeatherSmart wrap installed to spec, inspected by the manufacturer rep before any siding goes on. Properly installed wrap carries its own warranty separate from the siding.

Do you work in Toutle, Silver Lake and Vader?

Yes. Castle Rock, Toutle, Silver Lake and the rural properties north of Longview are regular service area.
