Hough, Carter Park, Shumway, Arnada and the streets around them are largely 1920s through 1940s houses, and a re-side there is as much investigation as installation. Original board sheathing, framing that has taken water around a window for decades, and weather barrier that is torn building felt or simply absent. Nobody can tell you what is back there from the driveway. It comes off and gets looked at.

Cascade Park, Fisher's Landing and the subdivisions built from the 1970s through the 1990s are the other job. Those houses were sided to the standard of their day and a lot of that material is now at the end of its life. The framing behind it is modern and predictable, which is good news, because it means the money goes into the wall assembly instead of into repairs.

What keeps water out of your house is not the siding. Siding is the first line and water gets past it eventually on every wall ever built. The weather barrier underneath is what protects the structure, and it is the layer most homeowners have never heard anybody mention.

We use WeatherSmart house wrap and install it the way the manufacturer requires, because their representative trained us on it directly. He also comes out and checks the wrap on each job before any siding goes on. Once the siding is up nobody can inspect what is behind it, so that visit is the only chance anyone gets to confirm the wall was built right. Properly installed wrap carries its own warranty separate from the siding warranty over it.

James Hardie siding installation in Vancouver means fiber cement lap over that wrap. It does not rot, insects have no interest in it, and it holds paint far longer than wood does. Installed to both manufacturers' specs, the WeatherSmart warranty stacks on top of the Hardie warranty. It costs more than vinyl and it takes proper cutting and fastening to install correctly, which is where the difference between installers shows up and is not visible from the street on day one.

You have probably already gotten a number from an installed sales program at one of the big home centers. Those get real work done. The difference is who shows up. That work goes out to whichever crew the store has contracted that week. When you hire me you get me. Thirty years, on the job every day, and I am the one accountable to you when the wall opens up and something has to be decided standing right there.

Send me photos of each elevation and a rough size on the house, and I will come back with a real read on what the job takes. If you already know about a soft spot or staining, say so.

Siding questions in Vancouver

How much does siding replacement cost in Vancouver, WA?

Wall square footage, trim and openings, and what is behind the old siding. On a 1920s house in the old core I expect to find repairs. On a 1980s house east of town the framing is predictable. Send photos of each elevation and a rough size for a written number.

Do you install James Hardie siding in Vancouver?

Yes. Hardie lap over WeatherSmart house wrap, installed to both manufacturers' specs, with the wrap rep inspecting before siding goes on.

Can you replace T1-11 or old wood siding with fiber cement?

Yes. Old material comes off, the wall gets repaired and wrapped, and Hardie lap goes on with full trim detail.

Do you do siding repair on one side of the house?

Yes. The weather side often fails first. Replacing that elevation and leaving the rest is a regular job.

Do you serve Hazel Dell, Salmon Creek and Orchards?

Yes. All of Vancouver and the unincorporated Clark County neighborhoods, plus Battle Ground and Ridgefield.
