Al Strano Project

Longview, WA

James Hurula Construction completed a new concrete driveway approach, bringing careful planning and quality craftsmanship to every step of the process. Before work began, the team took time to verify site conditions, confirm alignment, and ensure the work met all right-of-way requirements. This thoughtful preparation set the foundation for an approach that looks great, drains properly, and will stand up to years of use.

Scope of Work

James Hurula Construction will verify the driveway approach width, alignment, gutter elevation, and right-of-way requirements on site before excavation begins. Existing concrete and asphalt at the termination points will be saw cut to provide clean, straight edges for the new work. The approach footprint and continuous thickened edge trench will be excavated to the required depths, with spoils removed from the site and disposed of legally. The exposed subgrade will be graded and proofed for soft or unstable areas before base material is placed.

Crushed surfacing base course will be furnished, placed, graded, and compacted beneath the full approach slab and thickened edge strip to create a firm, uniform bearing surface. Forms will be installed straight, securely staked, and set to the proper elevation and cross slope so the finished approach drains away from the garage or structure and toward the gutter. The thickened edge will be formed continuously along the required length to tie the approach into the existing drive and gutter line.

Steel reinforcement will be installed throughout the slab and carried continuously through the thickened edge. Reinforcement will be supported on chairs to hold it near mid-depth during placement, and dowels will be installed where the new approach abuts existing concrete. Expansion joint material will be installed at abutments to existing concrete, structures, and the gutter line to allow movement and help reduce uncontrolled cracking.

Concrete will be placed by volumetric truck and mixed on site. The slab will be screeded, bull floated, edged, and finished with a broom texture for slip resistance. Control joints will be tooled or cut at appropriate spacing to help manage shrinkage cracking, and curing compound will be applied after finishing. Exposed perimeters will be edged for a clean, professional appearance.

After placement, the fresh concrete will be protected and barricaded from vehicle and foot traffic during the initial cure period. Once the work is ready, forms will be stripped, edges will be backfilled as needed, and the work area will be cleaned. All job-related debris, waste, and form materials will be hauled off at completion.
