deck repairs in Longview, WA
When a deck starts to show its age in the framing and stair structure, the right move is to get into the bones of it and fix what needs fixing before the problem grows. James Hurula Construction was brought in to do exactly that — a thorough structural repair of an existing deck, addressing the stair framing, primary beam, deck members, rim board, and support posts to bring everything back to solid, dependable condition. The goal was a deck that would be safe and ready for everyday use again, with as much of the original material salvaged and reused as possible.
Scope of Work
James Hurula Construction will prepare the deck and stair work area by setting up a safe access zone, protecting adjacent surfaces as practical, and confirming the existing stair, railing, deck framing, and support conditions before removal begins. The deck structure will be temporarily supported with posts, beam support, and jacks as needed to safely relieve load from the framing members scheduled for replacement. Existing handrail, stair treads, and railing components identified for re-use will be removed carefully and stored on site for reinstallation where serviceable.
Work will proceed by straightening the existing handrail alignment and removing the stair components necessary to access and replace one 8-foot stair horse/stringer. The existing stair treads and handrail will be reinstalled after the structural stair repair is complete, provided the salvaged pieces remain sound and suitable for reuse. Any fastening points disturbed during removal will be re-secured using appropriate exterior-rated fasteners.
At the deck framing, the existing 12-foot 4x12 beam under the deck will be removed and replaced while the temporary support system remains in place. Seven 20-foot 2x6 exterior deck members will be removed and replaced. The existing railing will be removed and re-used where possible, the 2x10 rim board will be removed and replaced, and damaged or removed pickets will be replaced to restore the railing assembly. Five 4x6 by 12-foot members will be sistered at the footer/support locations as described to strengthen the existing support layout.
All new exterior framing materials will be fastened with appropriate structural and corrosion-resistant connectors and fasteners suitable for exterior deck construction. Cut ends will be treated or sealed as needed, and the reinstalled railing, stair treads, and handrail will be checked for secure attachment and reasonable alignment. Final fitment will be performed to leave the repaired stair and deck framing stable, functional, and ready for normal use.
Upon completion, James Hurula Construction will remove construction debris generated by this scope, collect loose fasteners and cutoffs, and leave the immediate work area broom-clean. The completed repair areas will be reviewed with the customer, and any reused components will be noted if they show pre-existing wear, checking, splitting, or other conditions outside the replaced work scope.
