Mark Wreath Project

Concrete in Longview, WA

James Hurula Construction is getting underway on a meaningful outdoor transformation for this homeowner, replacing an aging deck and worn concrete with a fresh, spacious patio built to last. The project involves full demolition of the existing structure and old slab, followed by careful site preparation and the installation of a new exposed aggregate concrete patio across a generous footprint. From the first swing of the demolition work through the final sealer coat, the focus is on doing the job right and leaving the customer with an outdoor space they'll enjoy for years to come.

Scope of Work

James Hurula Construction will prepare the work area by protecting adjacent surfaces as practical, confirming the patio layout, and establishing access for demolition, excavation, haul-off, concrete pumping, and finishing operations. The remaining deck structure will be fully demolished where required, including the decking, framing, beams, posts, and any posts or footings that interfere with the new patio work. The existing ledger will be removed from the house wall, and all deck debris generated by this work will be hauled off and disposed of.

The existing concrete slab under and beside the deck, measured at approximately 15 ft x 10 ft plus 5 ft 6 in x 8 ft, will be broken out, removed, loaded, and hauled away. The fence post currently set on or affected by the old slab will be braced during the demolition and new concrete work to help maintain fence alignment until the new slab has cured sufficiently for the post to be reset. After curing, the post will be reset using a new anchor base.

For the new patio, the area will be excavated to approximately 8 inches below finished grade across the planned 13 ft x 39 ft footprint, and excavated soil will be hauled off. A 5/8 minus rock base will be imported, placed, graded, and compacted to create a solid subgrade. Forms will be set to establish the patio perimeter and finished elevation, and reinforcing steel will be installed using #3 rebar placed on an approximate 24 inch grid.

Concrete will be pumped into place for an approximately 4 inch thick slab using a 3/8 inch rounded aggregate mix for an exposed aggregate finish. The slab will be placed, screeded, floated, and finished to expose the aggregate surface, with control joints cut after placement to help manage normal shrinkage cracking. The finished surface will be completed in a workmanlike manner consistent with exposed aggregate concrete practices.

After the concrete has cured sufficiently, James Hurula Construction will return to acid wash the exposed aggregate surface and apply a gloss or satin sealer selected by the owner. Final cleanup will include removal of construction debris generated by this scope, stripping forms as appropriate, resetting the fence post on its new anchor base, and leaving the work area in broom-clean condition at project close-out.
