Tyler Hartshorn Project

Longview, Wa., WA

When a homeowner was ready to replace a worn-out concrete patio, they turned to James Hurula Construction to handle the job from start to finish. The project called for removing the old slab, preparing the ground properly, and pouring a new 16x10 patio along with a 4x8 walkway that would serve the space for years to come.

Scope of Work

James Hurula Construction WA# JAMESHC764LM will remove the existing 16x10 concrete patio, break it out as needed, load the debris, and haul it away for disposal. The work area will be prepared for replacement by clearing loose debris, checking the layout, and establishing the new patio and walkway footprint. The new work will include a 16x10 patio area and a 4x8 walkway, with grades reviewed in the field to promote proper drainage away from structures where site conditions allow.

After demolition is complete, the subgrade will be prepared and compacted as needed for a stable flatwork base. Forms will be set to the intended patio and walkway dimensions, aligned, secured, and checked for grade. A compacted gravel base will be installed where needed to support the new slab and provide a more uniform bearing surface prior to placement.

The new patio and walkway will be poured as standard exterior flatwork with a broom finish. Reinforcement will be installed within the slab area, control joints will be cut or tooled as appropriate, and expansion/isolation joint material will be installed where the new slab meets fixed adjacent surfaces when applicable. The finished surface will be broom-textured for improved traction and a clean exterior appearance.

Once the flatwork is placed and finished, the forms will be stripped after the slab has sufficiently set, edges will be cleaned up, and the surrounding work area will be restored to a neat condition. Concrete debris and job-related waste from the contracted work will be removed from the site. Final walkthrough will confirm that the patio and walkway have been completed according to the agreed scope, with curing guidance provided to the customer for protecting the new surface during the initial cure period.

Complete

The crew demolished and hauled away the existing patio, prepared and compacted the subgrade, set a gravel base, and poured the new flatwork with reinforcement, control joints, and a broom finish for traction and a clean look. After the forms were stripped and the site was tidied up, the homeowner walked away with a solid, well-drained outdoor surface and guidance on how to protect it through the initial cure.
