Methodist Church Structural Repair
Church project in Longview, Wa, WA
When a local church discovered that a rotted beam was compromising the structural integrity of their patio cover, they turned to James Hurula Construction to handle the repair with care and precision. The beam had deteriorated to the point where it needed full removal and replacement, along with the surrounding fascia, to restore the patio cover to safe and proper condition. James Hurula Construction approached the job with the same respect for the building and the people who use it that every church community deserves.
Scope of Work
James Hurula Construction will prepare the church building exterior for cleaning by walking the work area, identifying vulnerable openings, electrical fixtures, landscaping, painted surfaces, doors, windows, vents, and areas of exposed cinder block. We will coordinate access around the building, protect adjacent surfaces where practical, and establish a safe work zone for pressure washing operations. Any loose items near the building will be moved or requested to be moved before work begins so the cleaning process can proceed efficiently and safely.
The exterior wall surfaces will be pressure washed to remove dirt, mildew, algae, surface staining, loose residue, and general buildup from the church building. A diluted bleach cleaning solution will be applied where appropriate to treat organic growth and improve the effectiveness of the wash. The solution will be allowed proper dwell time without being permitted to dry excessively on the surface, then rinsed thoroughly to reduce residue and leave the surface clean for inspection and follow-up coating work.
Areas of cinder block wall that are down to bare concrete will be prepared for primer by removing loose dust, chalking, debris, and remaining contaminants to the extent achievable through washing and hand preparation. Once the surface is sufficiently dry and ready to accept coating, a suitable masonry primer will be applied to the exposed concrete/cinder block areas to promote adhesion and provide a proper base for future finish coating. Primer will be applied only to the bare or exposed masonry areas included in this estimate unless additional painting is authorized.
Finishing work will include checking the primed areas for reasonable coverage, touching up thin spots within the included scope, and confirming that treated wall sections have been rinsed and left in a clean, workmanlike condition. This estimate is for washing, bleach treatment, and spot priming of exposed cinder block/concrete only; full exterior repainting or coating of the entire building is not included unless specifically added by written change order.
Upon completion, James Hurula Construction will remove masking materials, collect job-related debris, restore moved items where practical, and perform a final walkthrough of the completed work area. The site will be left clean and orderly, with the customer advised of any areas where staining, coating failure, masonry damage, or additional preparation/painting may be recommended after the washing and priming work is complete.
Additional Work
As part of an added scope of work, James Hurula Construction prepared the site by reviewing the existing support, confirming the post layout, and establishing temporary bracing to protect the structure before any cutting began. During the work, a newly rotted beam was discovered, and two new posts were added to properly carry the load and restore the structure’s strength. Adjacent patio and finished surfaces were safeguarded throughout, reflecting the team’s care in protecting the space. The concrete patio was then precisely marked, saw-cut, and opened for proper excavation of the new footing, with all debris from cutting and excavation staged and removed in a clean, orderly fashion. Once the structural work was complete, the affected areas were pressure washed to remove dust, residue, and buildup, leaving the surfaces clean and refreshed. Finally, touch-up paint was applied where needed to blend the repairs seamlessly into the surrounding finish, restoring a crisp, uniform appearance and leaving the space looking clean, cared for, and complete.
