Kalama is home. The shop is on Confer Road and most of these jobs are a few minutes from the house, which means when something needs another look I am not scheduling a trip out from another county to do it.

Lots here run from flat river-bottom parcels to steep bluff sites looking over the Columbia. A bluff lot changes the whole build: post heights, footing depth, guardrail requirements, and how the stairs come off the deck all get driven by the grade before anything else gets decided. Getting that wrong means a failed inspection or a deck that never feels solid underfoot.

Wind coming up the river is real here too, and a covered deck catches all of it. If you want a cover, the framing underneath has to be sized for uplift, not just for the weight sitting on top. That is a decision worth making before the deck goes in rather than after.

We will walk your lot, talk through what the site allows, and put a written estimate in your hands before anything is ordered.

Cedar deck in a Kalama backyard rebuild

Cedar deck with handrails, stairs and lattice skirting, built as one piece of a full backyard rebuild next to a covered hot tub pad and a shed. Planning them together is what lets the deck, the cover and the concrete meet at the right heights.

Decks & Patios questions in Kalama

How much does a deck cost in Kalama, WA?

Size, height off the ground, decking material and railing decide it. A bluff lot with tall posts and a long stair costs more than the same deck on a flat yard. I am ten minutes from most of Kalama, so the fastest answer is to have me come look. The free deck estimator on this site gives a range.

Can you build a deck on a steep bluff lot?

Yes. Post heights, footing depth, guardrails and how the stairs come off the deck all get driven by the grade, and it gets drawn before it gets priced. Getting that wrong means a failed inspection or a deck that never feels solid.

Do you build covered decks in Kalama?

Yes. Wind up the river is real here and a cover catches all of it, so the framing underneath gets sized for uplift. If you want a cover, say so before the deck is built.

Do you do deck repair and railing replacement?

Yes. Soft boards, loose railings and stairs that move are most of the calls. Sometimes the framing is fine and only the surface and fasteners need replacing. I open it up and tell you which one you have.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Kalama?

Usually, if it is attached or more than 30 inches above grade. The City of Kalama permits decks inside city limits and Cowlitz County handles the rest. I pull it, and I build from the same drawing.
