Patio Cover Builder in Kalama, WA

Patio covers built in Kalama by a contractor who lives here. Wind comes up the Columbia and a cover catches all of it, so these get framed and tied down for uplift, not just for the weight on top.

I live in Kalama, so I know what the wind off the river does. It does not just blow across a cover, it gets under it and lifts. On a bluff lot facing the Columbia that is the main load, and it decides the hardware at every connection more than the weight of the roof does.

The tie to the house matters as much. A ledger has to bolt to framing that can carry it, and it has to be flashed so water runs off the house instead of behind the siding. That is the part nobody sees once the cover is done, and it is the part that decides whether the wall behind it is still dry in ten years.

Clear polycarbonate panels are a good fit for a lot of Kalama houses, because they keep the rain off without blocking the view or darkening the room behind. Metal and shingles are there when you want shade or a roof that matches the house.

Electrical goes to licensed trades. The carpentry is mine. My shop is on Confer Road, ten minutes from most of Kalama.

Send me the size you want covered, a photo of the back of the house, and which way it faces. Being local, if it is easier I can just come look.

Patio Covers questions in Kalama

How much does a patio cover cost in Kalama, WA?

Size, roof material, and whether it covers a slab or a raised deck. A bluff lot with tall posts costs more than the same cover on flat ground. I am ten minutes from most of Kalama, so the fastest answer is to have me come look.

Will a patio cover hold up to the wind off the river?

Yes, if it is tied together. Wind under a cover pushes up, so the rafters, beams, posts and footings get connected with hardware all the way to the ground. That is cheap at framing and it cannot be added later.

Can you cover a second-story deck?

Yes. The cover ties into the house above the deck and the posts carry down through the deck to footings. On a bluff lot that can mean tall posts, and they get sized for it.

Do you build hot tub covers?

Yes. One of the Kalama jobs on this page is a gazebo-style cover over a hot tub on a new pad, built with a cedar deck and a shed as one backyard project.

Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Kalama?

Usually, if it is attached to the house. The City of Kalama permits inside city limits and Cowlitz County handles the rest. I pull it, and I build from the same drawing.
