Fencing / Good Neighbor

Good Neighbor Cedar Fence in Cowlitz and Clark County

Every fence has a good side and a back side, and one of you gets the back side. A good neighbor fence is built so neither of you does, and it is the style people pick when the fence line is shared.

How I build it

Posts: Pressure-treated 6x6, 6 feet on center.

Footings: 18 inch round concrete pad, 24 inches deep, poured to grade.

Post connection: Standoff bracket on the pad.

Rails: Three cedar rails per bay.

Boards: 1x6 cedar, alternating sides of the rails.

Bottom: Pressure-treated 2x6 rot board on one face.

On a standard fence all the boards sit on one side of the rails, so one side shows the flat boards and the other shows the framing. On a good neighbor fence the boards alternate from one side of the rails to the other. Both sides show boards, and both sides look finished.

The alternating layout also lets wind through in a way a solid board fence does not. Each board overlaps the gap next to it, so you still get privacy, but there is less of a sail for the wind to push on. On a tall fence that is a real difference in how much load lands on the posts and pads.

It also settles a question before it starts. When you share a fence line, who gets the good side is a conversation nobody wants to have. Here nobody does, and that is the reason to build it this way.

The footings are the same as any fence I build: 6x6 posts on brackets over poured pads, set 24 inches deep and well below frost depth, so the post bottoms stay off the concrete and out of the ground.
