A general contractor is the one person who answers for the whole job. That matters most when a job takes more than one trade, because somebody has to decide what happens first, who comes in when, and what gets checked before it gets covered up. On my jobs that person is me, and I am standing there when the call has to be made.

Here is what that looks like. I turned a three-car garage into an accessory dwelling unit, a separate place to live on the same lot. I did the conversion, roofed it, and painted the main house. One contractor from the first walkthrough to the last coat of paint, instead of a homeowner trying to line up three companies and referee between them.

Longview was laid out as a planned city, and most of the houses went up between the 1920s and the 1950s. Work on a house that age rarely stays in one trade. Siding comes off and there is rot at the bottom of the wall. A kitchen wall opens up and the wiring behind it was sized for a light and a radio. A general contractor is who deals with that without stopping the job to go find someone else.

Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades. The carpentry is mine. I trained as a cement mason before the general contracting, and I am on site for every pour. Framing, decks, siding, tile, finish work and the running of the job stay with me.

I pull the permits. You get a written estimate before anything is ordered, and if something behind a wall changes the job, you hear the number before the work goes ahead.

My shop is on Confer Road in Kalama, fifteen minutes south of Longview. Thirty years in the trade. When you hire me you get me.

General Contractor Work questions in Longview

Is James Hurula Construction a licensed general contractor in Longview, WA?

Yes. Washington license JAMESHC764LM, bonded and insured. Thirty years in the trade and about ten years in business as the licensed company.

What does a general contractor do on a job in Longview?

Runs the whole job. I bid it, pull the permit, set the order the work happens in, do the carpentry and concrete, bring in licensed trades for electrical and plumbing, and answer for all of it. You deal with one person instead of four.

Can you convert a garage into an ADU or living space?

Yes. I have turned a three-car garage into an accessory dwelling unit. It is a permitted job, and I pull the permit.

Do general contractors in Longview use subcontractors?

I can only answer for my own jobs. Electrical and plumbing go to licensed trades I have worked with for years. The carpentry is mine, and I am on the job every day.

What kinds of jobs do you take as a general contractor?

Garage conversions, additions, whole house remodels, kitchens and baths, decks, patio covers, concrete, siding and fences. Most Longview houses were built between the 1920s and the 1950s, and that is the work I know.

How do I get an estimate from a contractor in Longview, WA?
